3 new ways to plan and book travel in Search
Planning a getaway often feels like a logistical puzzle, requiring users to juggle multiple browser tabs, compare fluctuating prices, and navigate complex loyalty programs. To streamline this process, Google is rolling out significant upgrades to AI Mode in Search, transforming the platform from a simple discovery tool into a comprehensive travel concierge.
According to James Byers, Group Product Manager for Search, these enhancements are designed to keep users in their "flow state," allowing them to manage flight tracking, rewards redemption, and hotel reservations without ever leaving the AI-powered interface.
Automated Flight Price Tracking
One of the most anticipated updates is the integration of Google Flights’ robust price-tracking technology directly into the AI chat experience. Users no longer need to manually monitor fares; they can simply ask the AI to keep an eye on specific routes and dates.
- Real-time Insights: AI Mode pulls data from over 300 partner airlines and travel agencies to provide the most current pricing.
- Proactive Alerts: By requesting, "track these flight prices for me," users receive email notifications the moment a price drop occurs.
- Global Reach: This feature is now live in more than 180 countries, ensuring travelers worldwide can capitalize on deals the moment they emerge.
"Planning a trip comes with lots of moving parts and countless options to consider. We’re upgrading that experience with new ways to track flight prices, view points or miles rates, and book your dream hotel, right in AI Mode." — James Byers, Group Product Manager, Search.
Maximizing Rewards and Loyalty Points
For frequent travelers, leveraging loyalty programs is essential for cost savings. Google is now making it easier to visualize the value of those points or miles directly within the search results. By specifying a preferred loyalty program, users can see exactly how many points are required for specific flights or hotel stays.
This feature is launching with support for major industry players, including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines, Hilton, Wyndham, and Choice Hotels International. In the coming weeks, the ecosystem will expand to include:
- Airlines: Lufthansa Group, LATAM Airlines, and Flying Blue.
- Hotels: Hyatt, Accor, and more.
Once a user identifies a redemption option that fits their budget, they can follow a direct link to the partner’s website to finalize the transaction. This capability is now available globally, providing a transparent look at the true cost of travel using earned rewards.
Seamless Hotel Reservations
Perhaps the most significant shift in the user experience is the introduction of native hotel booking within AI Mode. After searching for accommodations and reviewing guest feedback or amenity comparisons, users can now complete their reservation without navigating away from the search interface.
How the Booking Process Works:
1. Discovery: Describe your trip preferences to AI Mode to receive a curated, visual list of hotel options. 2. Selection: Once you identify the perfect property, choose the "Continue on Google" option. 3. Secure Checkout: Utilize Google Pay to finalize the booking, including room selection and cancellation policy review.
This new booking flow is currently rolling out in the United States in English. Google has partnered with a wide array of industry leaders to ensure a broad selection, including Expedia, Booking.com, Hotels.com, Marriott International, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Priceline, and Trip.com.
It is important to note that when users book through this interface, the hotel or the chosen travel platform remains the merchant of record, ensuring that all customer service inquiries and booking management are handled directly by the provider.
By consolidating these disparate travel tasks into a single, conversational interface, Google is effectively reducing the friction associated with travel planning. Whether you are hunting for the lowest fare or looking to burn through a stockpile of airline miles, the updated AI Mode in Search serves as a powerful, centralized hub for your next journey.
