Wispr raises $280M at $2B valuation as it looks beyond dictation

AI-powered dictation startup Wispr has officially secured $280 million in a Series B funding round, catapulting the company to a $2 billion valuation. Led by Menlo Ventures, this latest injection of capital brings the firm’s total funding to $361 million, a significant milestone achieved less than 10 months after its previous raise.

Expanding the AI Ecosystem

The fresh funding arrives as the dictation market becomes increasingly crowded. Wispr is currently navigating stiff competition from emerging players like Willow, Monologue, Aqua, and Superwhisper, alongside a wave of affordable tools targeting prosumers. To maintain its edge, Wispr is aggressively diversifying its product suite, moving beyond simple dictation to capture the lucrative meeting-intelligence market.

"The funds will allow Wispr to increase its footprint as it ventures into new areas, such as meetings, with its newly released note-taker tool."

Technical Upgrades and Strategic Growth

Alongside the financial news, Wispr is addressing recent user feedback regarding the performance of its Wispr Flow dictation tool. The company announced the launch of Canto, a new model designed to significantly enhance speech understanding. Wispr claims this upgrade will slash error rates from 30% to under 10%.

Key Strategic Developments:

  • Global Expansion: The company has successfully scaled its go-to-market operations across India and the U.K.
  • Hardware Integration: Partnerships with hardware innovators, such as the Oasis ring, are enabling users to dictate discreetly without the need for vocal projection.
  • Meeting Intelligence: Wispr is now competing directly with established platforms like Granola, Fireflies, and Read AI, with plans to integrate deeper functionality for document creation and email drafting.
  • Future Interfaces: The startup recently launched Wispr Interface Labs, spearheaded by former Amazon Alexa veteran Ariya Rastrow, to pioneer the next generation of human-computer interaction.

A Strong Investor Backing

The Series B round saw robust support from existing backers, including Notable Capital, NEA, Neo Ventures, 8VC, and MVP Ventures, all of whom increased their stakes. Furthermore, the company welcomed a roster of new investors, such as Acrew, Forerunner, Goodwater, Peak XV, Together Fund, and PLUS Capital.

As Wispr continues to evolve, its focus remains on transitioning from a niche dictation utility into a comprehensive productivity ecosystem, leveraging its new capital to solidify its position in the rapidly shifting AI landscape.
