Spotify will label ‘AI Persona’ profiles and exclude their music from recommendations
Spotify is taking a definitive step toward distinguishing human artistry from synthetic identities. The streaming giant announced on Tuesday that it will implement a new "AI Persona" labeling system for artist profiles that are determined to be AI-generated rather than representative of real people. Alongside these visual indicators, the platform will restrict such content from its editorial, algorithmic, and personalized recommendation engines.
A New Standard for Artist Transparency
Starting in mid-September, users will begin to see "AI Persona" badges displayed prominently on specific artist profiles. These tags will appear in the banner area, the "About" section, search results, and alongside track listings within playlists.
While Spotify is providing a pathway for artists to self-identify as AI Personas, the company is not relying solely on the honor system. Spotify will proactively audit artist profiles, focusing on those that utilize photorealistic imagery or names that suggest a synthetic identity. To manage this rollout effectively, the company will prioritize profiles that have already reached significant audience thresholds, ensuring that the most-streamed content is addressed first.
Key Features of the AI Persona Rollout:
- Visual Indicators: Badges will appear in banners, About sections, search results, and track rows.
- Algorithmic Exclusion: By default, AI Personas will be removed from editorial and algorithmic discovery, as well as personalized user recommendations.
- User Agency: Music from an AI Persona will only appear in a user’s personalized feed if that user has explicitly chosen to follow the artist, signaling a clear intent to listen.
- Appeals Process: Artists who believe their profile has been incorrectly flagged will have the opportunity to contest the label.
Balancing Innovation with Authenticity
This initiative represents the latest expansion of Spotify’s broader AI policy, which was first introduced in September 2025. The company is currently navigating a complex landscape: it is simultaneously embracing AI-driven features like the AI DJ, Prompted Playlists, and upcoming AI-powered remix tools, while working to curb the influx of low-quality, mass-produced "slop" that threatens to degrade the user experience.
"While we believe all artists have creative choice in determining how they present themselves, Spotify’s programming is focused on elevating music from authentic artists building careers in music."
Spotify was careful to clarify that the "AI Persona" label is a judgment on the artist’s public identity rather than the music itself. The company emphasized that there is a vast spectrum of how creators utilize AI as a production tool, and this specific badge is intended to clarify whether the entity behind the profile is a human being. Information regarding the technical creation of the music will remain accessible through existing features like AI Credits and SongDNA.
Looking Ahead: Reporting and Future Integration
In the coming months, Spotify plans to introduce a user-facing reporting tool, allowing the community to flag profiles that appear to be AI Personas but have not yet been labeled by the platform.
This move also serves to differentiate synthetic personas from the upcoming wave of fan-made, AI-generated remixes and covers. Following recent licensing agreements with major labels such as UMG and Merlin, Spotify is preparing to allow these types of remixes on the platform, provided they include mechanisms to funnel revenue back to the original artists.
For creators looking to comply with the new guidelines, the self-disclosure process via Spotify for Artists will open on August 11, 2026. As the industry continues to grapple with the rapid evolution of generative technology, Spotify’s latest policy shift underscores a growing commitment to protecting the visibility of human-led careers in an increasingly automated digital landscape.
