Shopify says AI search is driving more traffic and sales, not replacing Google

While many sectors of the digital economy are bracing for the disruptive impact of artificial intelligence, Shopify is reporting a different narrative. During the company’s second-quarter earnings call, leadership revealed that AI is acting as a powerful catalyst for e-commerce growth rather than a threat to traditional search traffic.

AI as a Complement, Not a Replacement

Shopify President Harley Finkelstein emphasized that AI has emerged as a "complement to search, rather than a substitute for it." This distinction is critical, especially when contrasted with the online publishing industry, where AI-generated summaries have frequently led to declining click-through rates and diminished advertising revenue.

For Shopify, the data tells a story of expansion. The company reported that AI-driven traffic and orders to its merchants' storefronts tripled year-over-year during the second quarter. Crucially, this surge has not come at the expense of traditional search engines.

"In fact, search remains one of our largest sources of buyer traffic to our merchants, and it’s still growing," Finkelstein told analysts. "Traditional search sessions are up 1.3x over the past two years, holding roughly a third of all storefront sessions."

Financial Performance and Market Impact

Shopify’s latest financial results underscore the efficacy of this strategy. The platform reported a 36% revenue increase to $3.6 billion, comfortably beating Wall Street’s expectations of $3.4 billion. Gross operating profit also saw a healthy rise of 31%, reaching $1.71 billion.

The company attributes this success to the unique way AI agents interact with its ecosystem. Unlike traditional search engines that rely on keyword ranking, AI agents leverage Shopify’s structured data to understand complex consumer intent.

How AI Agents Are Transforming Shopping

Finkelstein provided a clear example of why this shift is driving higher conversions:

  • Keyword vs. Intent: A traditional search for "car seat" might return the most popular items. An AI agent, however, can process specific constraints—such as vehicle type, dimensions, and the need to fit three seats across a sedan—to find the exact product that meets the user's needs.
  • Compressed Journeys: The efficiency of these agents is shortening the path to purchase. Half of all AI-referred sessions land directly on a product description page, a rate 2.5 times higher than that of traditional search.
  • Supporting the Long Tail: The impact is particularly felt by smaller merchants. Notably, 75% of AI-attributed purchases in Q2 occurred outside of the top 100 product categories, highlighting how AI helps shoppers discover niche items that might otherwise be buried in traditional search results.

Building the Future of Commerce

Shopify is not merely observing this trend; it is actively integrating AI into its infrastructure. The company has developed connectors for a wide range of AI platforms, including Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Manus, Replit, and Vercel. Furthermore, it is embracing "vibe-coding" platforms like Lovable, which empower merchants to build and customize their storefronts with unprecedented ease.

By positioning itself as a trusted checkout layer in an AI-driven world, Shopify is ensuring that as search evolves, its merchants remain at the center of the transaction. As the shopping journey becomes more intelligent and personalized, Shopify appears well-positioned to capture the value generated by these new, sophisticated search behaviors.
