Robotics startup Generalist reaches $3B valuation, sources say

The race to build a "brain" for general-purpose robotics has hit a new milestone. Generalist, a burgeoning startup in the physical AI space, has secured a fresh infusion of capital that pushes its valuation to $3 billion, according to individuals familiar with the transaction.

A Rapid Valuation Surge

The new funding round, which totals approximately $200 million, arrives as an extension to the company’s $400 million Series B round announced just this past June. At that time, the startup—which was then valued at $2 billion—was backed by lead investor Radical Ventures. This latest capital injection, spearheaded by 8VC, brings the total Series B funding to a substantial $600 million.

Both Generalist and 8VC have declined to comment on the reports.

The Team and Vision

Founded in 2024, Generalist boasts a high-profile founding team comprised of former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, alongside former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry. The company’s rapid ascent has attracted a prestigious roster of early backers, including:

  • Nvidia
  • Union Square Ventures
  • Bezos Expeditions
  • Fei-Fei Li

While the company operated in relative obscurity for its initial period, it has recently begun to pull back the curtain on its technology. Generalist is currently developing a foundational AI model designed to operate across diverse robotic hardware. Their recently unveiled Gen 1.5 model claims to allow robots to learn complex new tasks from video demonstrations lasting only 3 to 12 seconds.

"The funding surge reflects a bet from some investors that robotics may soon reach its own 'ChatGPT moment,' meaning that robots will be able to perform general tasks without being explicitly trained for each one."

The Competitive Landscape

Generalist is far from alone in the pursuit of universal robotic intelligence. The sector is currently seeing massive capital inflows, with competitors like Physical Intelligence reportedly valued at $11 billion and the SoftBank-backed Skild AI reaching a $14 billion valuation. Additionally, Genesis AI has been in active discussions to secure funding at a $3 billion valuation.

Despite the optimism, industry experts remain cautious. Unlike Large Language Models (LLMs) that can scrape the entirety of the internet for training data, robotics models face unique physical constraints. Some venture capitalists warn that achieving a truly general-purpose robotics model may remain a multi-year challenge. For now, Generalist is focusing on refining its model through direct feedback from a select group of early customers.
