Palo Alto Networks paid $500M for Thrive-backed Console, sources say
Cybersecurity titan Palo Alto Networks has finalized the acquisition of Console, a two-year-old startup specializing in AI-driven IT help desk automation. While the companies officially confirmed the deal on Tuesday, they remained tight-lipped regarding the financial specifics. However, sources familiar with the transaction indicate the acquisition was valued at $500 million in a mix of cash and stock.
A Rapid Exit for Console
Founded in 2024 by Andrei Serban—who previously sold his code-security firm Fuzzbuzz to Rippling—Console quickly gained traction. The startup raised $29 million across two funding rounds, backed by prominent firms including Thrive Capital and DST Global.
According to PitchBook, Console’s final valuation stood at $157 million prior to the sale, representing a significant windfall for early investors. Notably, Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora was an angel investor in the startup, further cementing his belief in the company’s vision.
Integrating AI into Cortex
Palo Alto Networks plans to fold Console’s technology into Cortex, its flagship platform for threat detection and neutralization. The integration aims to provide security teams with "agentic" capabilities, allowing them to resolve complex alerts using natural language.
"Console gives Cortex the arms and legs to deliver autonomous security outcomes across the entire enterprise," said Nikesh Arora in a statement regarding the acquisition.
Console’s platform previously automated high-volume IT tasks, such as password resets and application access management, for clients like Ramp, Flock Safety, and Scale AI.
Market Implications and Competitive Landscape
The acquisition marks a pivotal shift in the IT service management (ITSM) startup ecosystem. Industry analysts suggest that with Console off the table, Serval—a Sequoia-backed competitor valued at $1 billion—has emerged as the clear frontrunner in AI-powered IT automation.
Key Facts at a Glance:
- Deal Value: Estimated at $500 million.
- Console’s Funding: $29 million total (Seed and Series A).
- Strategic Goal: Enhancing Cortex with autonomous, agent-based security workflows.
- Palo Alto’s M&A Streak: This represents the company’s seventh acquisition of 2026.
Palo Alto Networks has been aggressive in its acquisition strategy this year. Beyond Console, the firm has secured other high-profile deals, including the $3.35 billion purchase of observability platform Chronosphere and the $400 million acquisition of cyber startup Koi. As the company continues to consolidate its position in the AI-security space, the industry will be watching closely to see how these diverse technologies integrate into a unified enterprise defense strategy.
