Nvidia confirms it will buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion

After weeks of intense industry speculation, Nvidia has officially confirmed its acquisition of Hugging Face in a deal valued at $12.93 billion. This landmark move brings together the world’s most dominant AI hardware provider and the leading hub for open-source machine learning.

Hugging Face has become the central nervous system for the modern AI developer community. Its platform currently hosts an staggering three million models, one million applications, and half a million datasets, serving a massive ecosystem of over 18 million developers.

A Commitment to Open Ecosystems

In an official blog post addressing the acquisition, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang sought to quell concerns regarding the future of the platform. He emphasized that Hugging Face will maintain its commitment to open-source and open-weight models, ensuring that the platform remains vendor-neutral.

"Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem. Developers will choose the models they want, the frameworks they want, the clouds and inference service providers they want and the computing platforms they want. Nvidia compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face," Huang stated.

Huang highlighted that Nvidia has already been a significant contributor to the platform, having released more than 500 models and 250 open datasets on Hugging Face. By fostering an open environment, Nvidia aims to ensure its hardware remains the preferred choice for developers globally, regardless of the specific software stack they employ.

Strategic Synergies and Market Growth

The acquisition serves several strategic purposes for Nvidia. Beyond securing a dominant position in the software layer of the AI stack, the deal allows Nvidia to monetize its unused compute capacity by bundling it with Hugging Face’s extensive service offerings for enterprise clients.

Founded in 2016, Hugging Face has seen a meteoric rise in valuation. According to Crunchbase, the company has raised over $395 million to date. Its most recent funding round in 2023 was led by Salesforce Ventures and included heavyweights like Google, Amazon, IBM, and Nvidia.

Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the community, framing the acquisition as a necessary step to scale the platform’s impact.

  • Scaling Infrastructure: Delangue noted that to reach a larger scale, the company required significantly more compute power and collaborative support.
  • Defensive Capabilities: The platform has increasingly become a target for security threats, with Delangue previously noting that Nvidia’s open models were instrumental in defending Hugging Face against cyberattacks when proprietary alternatives failed.

The Push for Frontier Models

Nvidia’s investment strategy has been aggressive, with the company reportedly pouring over $50 billion into AI frontier labs. Huang has been a vocal advocate for open-weight models, arguing that they are essential for national security and economic competitiveness, particularly in the face of global rivals like China.

Key Highlights of the Acquisition:

  • Financial Scope: The $12.93 billion price tag follows a reported rejection of a $500 million offer from Nvidia just last year.
  • Revenue Momentum: Recent reports from The Information suggest Hugging Face is generating approximately $150 million in annualized revenue, with the company nearing profitability.
  • Cybersecurity Focus: Huang emphasized that open models are critical for the next generation of autonomous, distributed cybersecurity systems, which are vital to both the American and global economies.

This acquisition marks a turning point in the AI industry. As Nvidia continues to expand its influence from silicon to software, the integration of Hugging Face provides the hardware giant with an unparalleled vantage point into the needs and workflows of the world’s most active AI developers. Whether this consolidation will truly preserve the "open" spirit of the platform remains a topic of intense debate, but for now, the industry is watching closely as these two titans merge their operations.
