Mesh, Automattic’s CRM for everyone, comes to Android
Automattic, the parent company behind WordPress.com, has officially brought its AI-powered personal CRM and relationship management tool, Mesh, to the Android ecosystem. Following its acquisition of the platform last year, the company is expanding its footprint, allowing Android users to organize, visualize, and maintain their professional and personal networks with greater ease.
A Native Experience for Android Users
The transition to Android is more than just a simple port; the development team has meticulously optimized Mesh to leverage the unique capabilities of the platform. Users can now enjoy a seamless experience that integrates with the operating system’s core features, including:
- Multitasking Support: Full compatibility with split-screen and pop-up window modes, enabling users to manage contacts while simultaneously navigating email or messaging apps.
- Hardware Flexibility: Enhanced support for tablets and foldable devices, including dedicated keyboard shortcuts.
- System Integration: Real-time synchronization across devices and home screen widgets that utilize Material You design language to match the user's specific wallpaper aesthetic.
- Enhanced Search: Robust in-app search functionality to quickly locate specific connections.
The Future of Relationship Management
While Mesh currently functions as a standalone productivity tool, Automattic has hinted at a deeper integration with Beeper, the company’s unified messaging application. Beeper already aggregates communications from a wide array of platforms—including WhatsApp, Signal, Slack, Discord, and LinkedIn—and there is already a degree of interoperability between the two services. Users can currently draft messages within Beeper or utilize deep links to jump directly into a contact’s Mesh profile.
The long-term vision for the product is to leverage artificial intelligence to reduce the cognitive load of maintaining thousands of connections.
“We’re thinking a lot about how can AI help you be a better friend and have better work and personal relationships? We have users who have ten-, twenty-, or fifty-thousand connections across multiple social media apps, across their work products. It’s an impossible task to think and be conscientious with you, with each of those people, by yourself,” said Mesh co-founder Zachary Hamed.
Harnessing Nexus AI
At the heart of the platform’s evolution is Nexus AI, currently in early access. This feature acts as a personal intelligence layer, allowing users to query their network in natural language. For instance, a user might ask the app to identify contacts who work at a specific firm, reside in a particular city, or possess expertise in a niche subject area.
The company is also exploring additional AI-driven enhancements, such as:
- Voice-based interaction: A hands-free mode for managing contacts on the go.
- Advanced Scanning: Improved business-card-scanning capabilities to digitize physical networking materials instantly.
Privacy and Business Utility
Despite the heavy reliance on AI, Automattic emphasizes that user privacy remains a top priority. Personal data stored within Mesh is not utilized for ad targeting or sold to third parties. Instead, the service operates on a subscription-based model. It remains free for users with up to 1,000 contacts, with tiered pricing available for those requiring unlimited storage and advanced features.
Currently, approximately 70% of the user base utilizes Mesh for professional purposes. Co-founder Matthew Achariam notes that while the platform is a favorite among executives managing large teams, the core functionality is designed to be universally applicable.
