Klaviyo acquires Elias Torres’ Agency in full-circle reunion for tech founders
E-commerce marketing automation giant Klaviyo has officially announced the acquisition of Agency, a three-year-old startup specializing in AI-driven customer success solutions. Founded by serial entrepreneur Elias Torres, the startup had previously secured $32 million in funding from prominent venture capital firms, including Sequoia, Menlo Ventures, and Felicis. While the financial specifics of the transaction remain undisclosed, the deal marks a significant strategic shift for Klaviyo’s product roadmap.
A Strategic Talent Acquisition
As part of the acquisition, Torres will step into the role of Chief Product Officer at Klaviyo. He brings with him his 25-person team, who will focus on accelerating the development of Klaviyo’s proprietary AI agents. The company is currently doubling down on two core products:
- Composer: An AI tool designed to streamline the creation of marketing campaigns.
- Customer Agent: A post-sale support solution capable of managing complex tasks like order tracking and returns.
"Elias and the team built a great product with Agency. We’re going to take that and combine it with our agent products and try to bring that to 200,000 businesses — and hopefully to millions more over the next couple of years," said Andrew Bialecki, co-founder and CEO of Klaviyo.
A Professional Homecoming
The acquisition serves as a poignant "full-circle" moment for both founders. Their professional history dates back to 2010 at Performable, where Torres served as a mentor to Bialecki, who was then one of the startup’s earliest engineers. Torres’ track record in the industry is extensive, including co-founding Drift—which saw a $1.2 billion exit to Vista Equity in 2021—and his earlier exit with Performable to HubSpot.
The bond between the two remains strong; Bialecki even invited Torres to participate as an angel investor during Klaviyo’s initial seed round in 2015. Since then, Klaviyo has grown into a publicly traded powerhouse, completing its IPO in September 2023 at a $9.2 billion valuation.
Competing in the Age of AI
Despite recent market volatility affecting many SaaS companies, both Bialecki and Torres are confident that Klaviyo’s deep reservoir of historical customer data provides a distinct competitive advantage. They believe this data moat will allow their AI agents to outperform rivals such as Decagon and Sierra.
Key Takeaways
- Leadership Shift: Elias Torres joins as CPO to spearhead AI agent development.
- Integration: Agency’s 25-person team will be absorbed into Klaviyo’s product division.
- Vision: The founders view AI agents as the next major revolution in the technology sector.
"It’s the next Big Tech revolution: agents," Bialecki noted. "Let’s get the band back together, and let’s go build."
