Google Maps adds agentic features, including food ordering and hotel bookings
Google is fundamentally shifting the identity of its flagship navigation platform. On Thursday, the tech giant announced a significant expansion of its "Ask Maps" feature, introducing a suite of agentic capabilities designed to evolve the app from a simple wayfinding tool into a proactive, task-oriented digital assistant.
From Navigation to Personal Assistant
The latest update empowers Google Maps to handle complex, real-world errands directly within the interface. By integrating advanced AI, the platform can now facilitate food delivery, manage hotel reservations, and assist in discovering event tickets. This move signals Google’s broader ambition to keep users within its ecosystem by streamlining the transition from discovery to transaction.
Streamlining Daily Errands
The new agentic food ordering feature allows users to make highly specific requests, such as searching for a particular meal—like a vegan avocado toast paired with an oat milk latte—near their current location. Once the AI identifies suitable restaurants, users can initiate orders through integrated platforms like Square, Toast, or Uber Eats. The app manages the cart, allowing users to finalize their purchases without ever leaving the Maps environment.
Similarly, travel planning has become more intuitive. Users can input nuanced queries, such as:
"For next weekend’s conference in downtown Miami, find me a decently priced, top-rated hotel with an artsy vibe within walking distance from a gym and restaurants."
The AI then cross-references pricing and availability before presenting a curated list of options, complete with direct links to partner booking sites. The same logic applies to entertainment, where users can ask for local comedy shows or live music events and proceed directly to ticket purchasing.
Integrating Personal Intelligence
Perhaps the most significant upgrade is the introduction of Personal Intelligence. By opting into this feature, Ask Maps can securely access a user’s Gmail and Google Calendar to provide highly customized assistance.

- Privacy-First Design: To ensure user trust, Personal Intelligence is disabled by default, requiring manual activation.
