Embattled hedge fund Situational Awareness invests $400M in chip startup Source Foundry
Despite a turbulent period that forced a massive liquidation of its public holdings, the AI-centric hedge fund Situational Awareness is doubling down on its commitment to hardware innovation. According to The Wall Street Journal, the firm has funneled an additional $400 million into Source Foundry, a startup launched by Stanford researchers dedicated to streamlining and reducing the costs of semiconductor manufacturing.
A Strategic Pivot
This latest infusion brings the fund’s total stake in Source Foundry to $500 million. The move signals a continued aggressive strategy by founder Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher who established the fund in 2024 with no prior trading background.
Financial Headwinds
The investment comes at a precarious time for the firm:
- Portfolio Liquidation: In late July, the fund offloaded most of its public assets to Citadel, led by Ken Griffin.
- Asset Contraction: Assets under management have reportedly plummeted from $20 billion to $10 billion following a downturn in AI infrastructure stocks.
- Selective Retention: Despite the sell-off, the fund notably retained its equity in Anthropic.
"Situational Awareness may have had to sell off the majority of its public portfolio last month, but the AI-focused hedge fund is still making some big bets."
While the firm navigates these financial challenges, Aschenbrenner remains focused on long-term AI infrastructure, seemingly undeterred by recent market volatility.
