ChatGPT is getting a lot more visual, with the launch of a new interface
OpenAI is fundamentally transforming the ChatGPT experience, moving beyond static text to a more dynamic, interactive environment. With the debut of its latest model, GPT-6, the company is introducing a feature dubbed "Intelligent UI," designed to weave rich, functional visuals directly into the fabric of user conversations.
Moving Beyond Static Text
For years, ChatGPT has functioned primarily as a text-based conversationalist. However, the introduction of Intelligent UI marks a departure from flat, static imagery. Instead, users can expect a suite of interactive elements—such as tappable buttons, dynamic charts, editable graphs, and task-specific calculators—that allow for direct engagement within the chat window.
"While ChatGPT has predominantly been a text-based interface, the company really wants to help users get things done—from everyday things like planning a recipe or a trip or even trying to learn something—the most helpful answers aren’t just text," said Aarush Selvan, a product manager at OpenAI.
Practical Applications for Complex Topics
The core objective behind this update is to simplify the comprehension of complex subjects. During a recent demonstration, OpenAI showcased how the interface can instantly generate diagrams to explain abstract concepts. For instance, a student inquiring about the physics of airplane lift can now receive a series of interactive diagrams that visualize aerodynamic forces in real-time.
Other practical use cases highlighted by the team include:
- Educational Diagrams: Visual breakdowns of mechanical systems, such as bicycle gears.
- Planning Tools: Interactive maps for multi-day hiking trips or travel itineraries.
- Utility Features: Customized personal savings calculators and recipe-specific visual guides.
Customization and Availability
OpenAI recognizes that not every user wants a visual-heavy experience. To maintain a personalized workflow, the platform includes settings that allow users to scale back the frequency of these visual elements if they prefer a more traditional text-only interface.
Rollout Schedule
The update is being deployed in a phased approach: 1. Wednesday: The feature launches globally for Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise subscribers alongside the GPT-6 model. 2. Thursday: The update will become available to users on the free and lower-cost Go tiers.
By integrating these interactive components, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a more versatile tool, potentially broadening its appeal to a wider audience while significantly enhancing the utility of its AI-driven assistance.
